Bush Walking
 
 

 

There are many great bush walks and tours on Moreton Island.

You can join a bush walk or tour with the resort or if you are comfortable on your own, take off on one of the many walking tracks. Make sure you get directions and take adequate food and water - there are some serious bush walks on Moreton.

Below is an outline of walks and tours conducted by the resort. Simply call the resort on the phone provided in your dream home and check with reception regarding booking and times.

  • MARINE BEACH WALK, (Runs for around an hour)
    Tangalooma Resort resident Marine Biologists are guides on an informative beach walk looking at the varying types of marine creatures that inhabit the inter-tidal zone of Tangalooma Resort and surrounding beaches. The Education Centre staff teach guests about how the individual animals relate to their environment and what role they actually play within this fragile tidal environment.
    The Education Centre staff answer questions and help guests identify and understand creature roles in textbooks upon their return to the Education Centre.

     
  • HISTORICAL WHALING STATION TOUR, (Runs for around an hour)
    From 1952 to 1962 the Tangalooma whaling station was the largest shore based whaling station in the southern hemisphere. In this tour guests are taken through the remnants of this historical site and are shown actual operational video footage. This video footage was converted from an old news film taken in 1955. It’s quite amazing to see the changes in attitude since that time. On this tour, guests are provided with an interpretive history lesson on whaling and its effects on the animals and environment. It finishes with a brief talk about increasing the sustainability of human/whale interaction. The Tangalooma whaling station remnants are one of the only surviving intact flensing decks left in the world.

     
  • WHALE WATCHING TOURS (June-October only)
    The resort conducts land, sea and aerial whale watching tours in these months. It is estimated that there are around 4,800 Humpback whales migrating passed Moreton Island each year. The resort catamarans take up to 250 guests into the Moreton Bay Marine Park and out to the old whaling grounds off Moreton Island to view these gigantic mammals.
    The tours are all guided by one of the marine scientist form the Marine Education and Research Centre.
    The resort operates the largest whale-watching vessel in the southern hemisphere and guests are always enthralled by the experience.

     
  • BIRD SPOTTING WALK, (Runs for around an hour)
    A must do for all bird lovers and enthusiasts, a morning walk around the landscaped resort grounds looking at local and transient bird species that call “Tangalooma” home. Our resident biologist will give information on the species, their habitats and interesting local knowledge.
    Binoculars & Field Guides are provided and questions are encouraged.

     
  • EDUCATIONAL Power Point Presentations, (Runs for around an hour)
    The power point presentations within the Marine Education centre are informative talks on varying subjects including Dolphins, Whales, Turtles, Dugongs, Sharks and The Marine Creatures of Moreton Bay.
    Resident Biologists share specialist knowledge during these presentations to resort guests ranging from adults to children. All presentations contain actual footage taken from the Moreton Bay region.
    These presentations run for around and hour and are very popular with resort guests.

     
  • BUSH TUCKER WALK, (Runs for around an hour)
    Learn about the local history of Moreton Island and some of the edible plant species that where utilised by the Aboriginal People that once inhabited Moreton Island. Our resident Ecologist will discuss plant species that are found around the Tangalooma resort grounds. The local Aboriginals that once inhabited the South East Queensland area had incredible knowledge of the local environment. Guests are taught on this tour about Aboriginal understanding, legends and passive interaction with the environment.

     
  • NIGHT SPOTLIGHTING WALK, (Runs for around an hour and a half)
    Our resident Nature Guide will give an enlightening power point presentation on nocturnal species that inhabit the Tangalooma Resort grounds! Once you know what you are looking for, head out with your guide and a spotlight in search of these amazing creatures, bandicoots, bats, sugar gliders, squirrel gliders, snakes, spiders & more!!
    Within the presentation you will hear some of the sounds and noises these animals make, even when we can’t see them, we can hear their presence.

     
  • COASTAL PLANT WALK, (Runs for around an hour)
    Ever wondered how some plants survive and establish in a totally sandy and salty environment? Learn with our Ecologist about these amazing colonising plants and their important role within this fragile island existence. Environmentalists take guests on a guided beach walk and explain how these fragile coastal environments have to be nurtured and conserved.
    One of the lessons learned from this walk is how we can all tread more softly on the planet earth.

     
  • SEWERAGE PLANT TOUR, (Runs for around an hour)
    Tangalooma Resort has a totally environmentally friendly Sewerage Treatment Plant. This tour is guided by the Resort Engineer and is a must for those interested in water treatment and ways to recycle and assist our already overburdened environment.
    Australia is reportedly the driest continent on the planet, recycling water is a very interesting technology and these systems are all explained and demonstrated.

     
  • GEOMORPHOLOGY WALK, (Runs for around an hour)
    Learn about Moreton Island, the third largest sand island in the world and how it was formed. This tour explains the geologic formation of the South East Queensland landscape and surrounding areas. Many of the old shield volcanoes can still be seen in the area and these happenings are all explained.
    A great learning experience for all that involves a short walk along the beach with our Education Centre staff, learning about and admiring the spectacular views and events in ancient history.

     
  • 2 HOUR BUSH FLORA & FAUNA WALK
    For all the bushwalking enthusiasts amongst us, come along with our resident Ecologist for an energetic walk up the vegetated dunes behind the resort. Look at the types of flora and fauna that inhabit the coastal and inland areas of Tangalooma and even get fit along the way!!

     
  • ECO KIDS ENVIRONMENT ACTIVITIES, (Runs for around an hour)
    Fun and educational games for kids ranging in ages from 6 to 9 years and 10 to 14 years. In this programme we teach the children how to conserve the environment, how to be Junior Eco Rangers and the most important lesson of all, how to Reduce, Re-use and Recycle.
    This course includes an Eco Treasure Hunt around the resort where children are encouraged to discover where the next clue is by solving an environmental problem.
    These Eco courses run for approximately an hour and all children are awarded an “Eco Ranger Certificate”.

     
  • BACK OF HOUSE RESORT TOUR, (Runs for around an hour)
    Learn about a fully operational Tourist Resort from a “behind the scenes” tour. Our staff will take you ‘back of house’ to see how the resort is powered, staffed and functions on a day-to-day basis.
    Tangalooma is located on the isolated Moreton Island within the Moreton Island National Park, one of the biggest National Parks within Queensland.
    There are no services to Moreton island and the resort has to treat our own sewage, generate our own power, Pump and treat our own water supply, repair our own equipment, launder all of our own Manchester etc. This tour is very interesting and demonstrates and explains the whole system.

     
  • BIRD FEEDING AT THE JETTY, (Runs for around an hour)
    Meet our staff at the jetty to watch a bird feeding demonstration were Pelicans, Cormorants, Kites, Turns and other types of birds are fed a small portion of fish at 08:30 each morning.
    The interpretive activity explains the migrations, predators and lifestyles of these animals on a daily basis.
